Removals Porter / Mover

Porters are the heart of a removals company. You are the person wrapping someone's dining table, carrying a wardrobe down four flights, and putting the bed back together at the other end so the family can sleep in it that night. It is physical work, and it is genuinely satisfying when a move that looked impossible at 8am is finished and tidy by teatime.

You do not need removals experience. We train from scratch, on the job, alongside crew leaders who have done thousands of moves. What we cannot train is care: the instinct to put a blanket down before you rest a wardrobe on it. If you have that, we will teach you the rest.

What the job involves

• Packing and wrapping belongings so they survive the journey, from crockery to televisions
• Dismantling and reassembling beds, wardrobes, desks and flat-pack furniture
• Protecting floors, doorways and banisters before the carrying starts
• Loading the vehicle to a plan, so weight is balanced and nothing shifts
• Carrying and stair work, using sack trucks, straps and lifting aids properly
• Labelling and inventory checks so nothing goes missing between the two addresses
• Placing furniture and boxes where the customer wants them, and clearing packing waste away

What we are looking for

• The right to work in the UK, and age 18 or over
• A decent level of fitness, and no problem with repeated lifting and stairs
• Reliability above everything else: crews are sized to the job, so one missing person changes the whole day
• Care with other people's belongings, and honesty if something does get damaged
• Enough English to work safely as part of a crew and speak to customers
• Willingness to travel to the depot or a job start point for an early start

Helpful, but not essential

• Previous removals, warehouse, delivery or general labouring experience
• A manual handling certificate
• A full UK driving licence, which opens the door to driver training later on
• Experience with pianos, antiques, safes or other awkward specialist items
